5 bold summer make-up looks inspired by Marilyn herself

There’ll be no more making excuses for yourselves, ladies – the sun’s out so you should be too. Now, we know it’s a scary thought after the months – nay, years – of covering up your sorry, flaky flesh with endless pashminas, but we’re afraid it’s time. And if you’re going to venture outside, you’d better do something about your average face. If there’s any season where you can really slather on the slap, it’s the summer. So take a leaf out of the factually most glamorous woman to have ever graced this sorry planet’s book and try these bold summer make-up looks, don’t be afraid to take risks, and consider a jaunty accessory or two to really make your ensemble pop.

1. The English Rose

Marilyn on her way to Helen Mirren’s wedding.

We love the incredible attention to detail that Marilyn shows in this outfit – matching jacket, tie, top hat and lips, not to mention those beautiful leather gloves to match her short dark bob. Looks like it was a beautiful day for Mirren’s wedding, too – not a cloud in the sky.

2. The smokey eye

The famously seductive performance for Obama.

People are always so conservative when it comes to eye make-up. But not Marilyn – oh no. She took the ‘what’s acceptable’ rulebook, chewed it up and spat it out. In this iconic image, she shows how incredibly impactful eyeliner can be if you don’t remain confined to the eye. For Marilyn, the whole right side of the face is fair game. No wonder Obama couldn’t resist.

3. The double whammy

Cute make-up and snappy tailoring – a little masculine, some might say, but we love it.

Why does it have to be eyes or lips? Tits or legs? You’ve got them all so you might as well get them all out! And as Marilyn demonstrates beautifully here, you can have a bold eye and a bold lip and it won’t look overdone. Especially if you match your eyeshadow with your tie.

4. The romancer

Undeniable.

The bright purple, pinks and oranges in this look are totally on trend. Just remember, it won’t have the same impact if you don’t put the rose in between your lips – so it’s really worth going the extra mile if you want people to notice you. If your lips latch onto a thorn and begin to bleed, it’s fine – the blood will blend in with your lipstick for a look that lasts all evening.

5. The drama queen

Marilyn cries out in frustration as she breaks a heel on the way to the office.

You don’t get as famous as Marilyn without being a little daring sometimes. So while this look might seem a tad OTT, it’s actually an incredible piece of face art. Note how the white lashes contrast beautifully with the white iris of the left eye, and how the soft wine-coloured lips are juxtaposed with the metal teeth. It really is something very special – and guaranteed to turn heads!

  1. I’ve often wondered what the obsession is with Marilyn. I’ve never understood why people say she was the most beautiful creature on this earth. But now I totally get it! Thanks for helping me see the light.
